A Boho Night in Tulum One Mezcal at a Time

Because Tulum Nightlife Doesn't Always Have to End at a Club

There are plenty of ways to experience Tulum nightlife.

One involves DJs, beach clubs, and dancing until sunrise. But there's another, much more relaxed version: start with mezcal before dinner, move on to a mezcalita, share something to eat, and let the music decide where you order your last drink.

The idea isn't to visit ten bars in one night.

It's about choosing a few stops, enjoying each one, and discovering how Tulum changes after sunset.

This is our version of a boho night in Tulum, one mezcal at a time.

First Stop | Start With Mezcal Neat

Before the elaborate cocktails, start with the essential.

Mezcal on its own.

Find a mezcalería or bar where you can explore different labels and ask about origin, agave varieties, and flavor profiles.

If you don't know much about mezcal, that's completely fine.

Ask questions. Compare. Sip slowly.

Part of the experience is discovering just how different one mezcal can taste from another.

Depending on the agave and production method, you may notice mineral, herbal, fruity, earthy, or smoky characteristics.

The mood: easy conversation, a slow start, and absolutely no rush to reach the next stop.

Second Stop | Time for a Mezcalita

Once you've tasted mezcal on its own, change the format completely.

Look for a good mezcalita in Tulum.

It might be citrusy, feature tropical fruit, or play with chile and salt. The interesting part is seeing how completely different the same spirit can feel inside a cocktail.

This is also where the night starts getting a little louder.

More music.

More people.

Maybe a terrace or small courtyard.

You can still have a conversation, but it's becoming clear that the night is only getting started.

The mood: cocktails, music, and the moment you realize you're probably not heading back to the hotel early.

Third Stop | Eat Something Before Moving On

This part isn't optional.

A mezcal crawl without food probably isn't the best plan.

Stop somewhere for Mexican food you can share: tacos, tostadas, ceviche, guacamole, or a few small plates that give you an excuse to sit down for a while.

You don't need to turn this into a three-hour dinner.

Eat something, drink water, and slow down the pace.

Besides, some of the best nights in Tulum happen around a table that was originally supposed to be “just a quick snack.”

The mood: food in the middle of the table, water within reach, and nobody checking the time.

Fourth Stop | Follow the Music

Now stop thinking so much about what you're drinking.

Think about what you want to hear.

A boho night in Tulum might lead you toward a laid-back DJ set, Latin rhythms, vinyl, reggae, softer electronic sounds, or live music depending on what's happening that evening.

Downtown and La Veleta can work particularly well when you're looking for something more casual, while Tulum Beach generally offers a more curated version of nightlife.

You don't need the biggest venue.

Sometimes a small bar, low lighting, and really good music create a much better night.

The mood: less itinerary, more following whatever sounds good.

Fifth Stop | The Last Drink

Every good night needs to know when to end.

For your final stop, change things up.

Maybe you return to mezcal neat.

Maybe you order a simple cocktail.

Or maybe after several stops, you realize the perfect final drink is sparkling water with lime before finding tacos and heading back to the hotel.

There's no prize for adding another bar.

The goal is to end the night while you're still enjoying it.

The mood: low lights, long conversations, and someone inevitably saying, “Just one more.”

Downtown, La Veleta or Tulum Beach

Your night can feel completely different depending on where you build it.

Downtown Tulum works well when you want something spontaneous, casual, and easy to finish with tacos.

La Veleta fits the boho mood particularly well: smaller restaurants, cocktails, courtyards, and places that can make the evening feel less like you're following a nightlife circuit.

Tulum Beach makes more sense when you want a polished experience, with jungle restaurants and bars where design, music, and cocktails are all part of the concept.

You can mix areas too, but consider distance and transportation before heading out.

A boho night should feel effortless.

Not like a race from taxi to taxi.

Mezcal Is Better When You Don't Rush It

There's one important idea behind this entire route.

Mezcal doesn't need to become a round of shots.

Part of its appeal is drinking it slowly and noticing the aromas and flavors that make each expression different.

Alternate drinks with water, eat throughout the evening, and remember that the goal isn't to see how many places you can visit.

It's to enjoy the ones you choose.

Three great stops will always beat seven you barely remember.

The Best Night in Tulum Might Be the One That Never Made It to the Club

Tulum has its big parties, but the Tulum boho scene also lives in much smaller moments.

A tiny bar.

A mezcalita.

Shared tacos.

Music you heard from the street and decided to follow.

And a final drink that somehow turned into a much longer conversation than expected.

You don't need to know exactly where the night will end before you leave.

That might actually be the best part.
