Five days is the right amount of time for Tulum — enough to cover the ruins, do 2–3 cenotes, experience one beach club properly, see Cobá, eat across the full price spectrum, and have time for unhurried mornings. Here's how to structure it.
Day 1 — Arrival and orientation
Arrive in Tulum by noon if possible. Drop bags at your accommodation and walk the hotel zone road or Pueblo main street to get your bearings. If staying in the hotel zone, swim in the afternoon. Dinner in Tulum Pueblo at El Camello Jr. for fresh seafood ($150–300 MXN per person). Early night — the next 4 days are full.
Day 2 — Tulum ruins and Gran Cenote (morning)
At the ruins for 8am opening — arrive early. 2 hours at the site covers everything. Descend to the beach below the ruins for 30 minutes. By 10:30am, bicycle or taxi to Gran Cenote (3 km west). Swim and snorkel until noon — arrive early enough to share it with manageable rather than peak crowds. Lunch at a Pueblo fonda on the main street ($80–150 MXN per person). Afternoon: rest, beach, or market exploration.
Day 3 — Cobá day trip
Early departure by rental car or taxi toward Cobá (40 minutes from Tulum hotel zone). Arrive at 8:30am. Rent a bicycle at the entrance ($50 MXN) and explore the full site — the Nohoch Mul pyramid climb is the priority (allow 45–60 minutes for the ascent and descent). 2–3 hours at the site total. Lunch at the Cobá entrance or at the village adjacent to the site ($100–180 MXN per person). Return to Tulum by 2pm. Afternoon beach at the hotel zone. Evening: Gitano or a Pueblo mezcal bar for drinks.
Day 4 — Dos Ojos cave snorkeling and beach club
Book the Dos Ojos morning snorkel tour in advance ($500–600 MXN per person). Depart Tulum at 8am — the cenote is 10 km west. 2 hours at Dos Ojos including the guided cave passage. Return to Tulum hotel zone by noon. Beach club afternoon — this is the day for a beach club experience. Papaya Playa Project, Nomade, or El Pez depending on your budget and energy level ($800–3,000 MXN per person minimum). Sunset from the beach club. Dinner in the hotel zone (Hartwood or Arca if budget allows; Gitano as a more available alternative).
Day 5 — Muyil ruins and biosphere, slow morning
Slow morning — cenote swim at Calavera or Zacil-Ha near Tulum (both open at 8am, $150–200 MXN entry). Lunch in Pueblo. Afternoon: Muyil ruins and canal tour (25 km south, $300–500 MXN for the tour). Return to Tulum before dinner. Final night: Tulum Pueblo bar scene (El Cohete, Batey) — an appropriate ending to a week spent between two different worlds of the same destination.
